History

Slowpoke's image of 'The Beast'.

Feed The Beast was originally created as a custom challenge map, developed by a small team led by Slowpoke. It was announced on February 24th, 2012 on the Minecraft Forums[1]. The map was a Sky Block map; the player spawned on a small platform in a void world, and must overcome a series of challenges. Using the tech mods in the modpack, these goals would be checked and give rewards automatically.

The map was adapted to allow multiple players to compete against each other in a race to complete the objectives. This version gained large popularity after being live-streamed on Twitch.tv with Direwolf20 competing against Mattabase, both very well known users of the mods included in the map.

After the map was released, the FTB Team decided to simplify the installation of the modpack by creating a launcher to automatically distribute the map, mods and configuration for those interested in playing it.

The map went through various iterations, including the bedrock map - known for the challenge and reward structure made of bedrock. However most players that refer to the 'FTB map' mean the pyramid map, known for its large basalt pyramid that included various rooms that listed a set of items the player had to create in order to solve each challenge. That version was then updated to a harder version, known as FTB Insanity, which took many players 50 to even over 100 hours of play time to fully complete.

Slowpoke's FTB mod pack announcement image.

After hearing about many players using the modpack without playing the modpack, Slowpoke announced the creation of a new, general kitchensink modpack on August 13th, 2012 with a post on the Minecraft Forums[2].

An important feature of the new modpack was the solicitation of permissions[3] from the mod developers prior to inclusion of that developer's mods in the FTB modpack, which had previously caused Technic controversy.

The modpack was centered around mods built using Minecraft Forge. It initially focused on mods of a technical theme, such as IndustrialCraft 2, BuildCraft, and RedPower 2, but it expanded to include magic mods like Thaumcraft 3 and Mystcraft.

The initial mod pack was released as a beta in November 2012. It stayed in beta status for some time because of the necessity for mod authors to update their mods to Minecraft version 1.4, where everything became server based. This process proved a long road for a few of the mods that were core to the pack.

Other versions of the FTB modpack were created, including a Lite version, which slimmed down the list of mods to assist new users learn the ins and outs without being overwhelmed. A Magic World version, which focused on mods of a magical nature, was also released.

Many recent FTB modpacks include built-in quests with Hardcore Questing Mode, and some focus on other themes and difficulties. FTB Infinity Evolved contained two modes: a normal mode and an 'Expert Mode'. In the Expert Mode, several of the recipes of various blocks and items were modified, forcing players to progress through many mods' tech trees in order to progress. FTB Infinity Evolved has sometimes been cited as the most popular Minecraft modpack in history.

The FTB Launcher

The launcher was released during a livestream by Slowpoke101. The number of downloads initially overwhelmed the server, leaving many users frustrated. After resolving the server issues, a beta version was released. A website, feed-the-beast.com, soon followed. The first production release also suffered from the sheer number of downloads, but the issues were shortly resolved.

The main features of the launcher were:

  • It automatically downloaded a list of FTB modpacks and approved 3rd party modpacks.
  • It automatically downloaded all mod installation files and creation of the minecraft instance.
  • It had full distribution support from all developers of the mods included in the pack.
  • It had a planned set of config files, assigning unique ids to all mod blocks, preventing overlaps that cause Minecraft to crash and were the frequent bane of users trying to manually install mods.
  • It automatically downloaded featured and 3rd party maps, such as the Feed the Beast challenge map.
  • It supported downloading of pre-configured server instances, making it very easy for admins to host the mods on a server.
  • It automatically downloaded featured and 3rd party texture packs.

Twitch Desktop App

Main article: Twitch Desktop App

After a partnership with Curse, Inc., the FTB Launcher was planned to be replaced with the Curse application, later renamed to the Twitch Desktop App. The Twitch Desktop App allows for easier modpack creation, configuration and usage. However, as the application currently does not support Linux, the FTB Launcher was still supported, but it was considered deprecated.

On October 8 2019, it was publicly announced that the partnership between FTB and Twitch.tv had ended. As a result, on November 1 of that year, FTB planned to pull all of its content (modpacks and mods) from Twitch/CurseForge and migrate to self-hosting it. A revamp of the FTB Launcher was released on 6 April 2020.[4] Despite the announcement, the content has not yet been pulled from CurseForge

3Nuclear ExplosiveColloquially called a 'nuke', the nuclear explosive does a large amount of damage, and creates fallout in the extended blast radius
4AntimatterMassive explosion
4Red MatterCreates a self sustained red matter reaction, slowly expanding, consuming materials until it reaches a sustained radius of 35 blocks. It can only be destroyed by a second red matter explosion.

Explosive Delivery Methods

In addition to simply powering the explosive with a redstone signal, explosives can be delivered in 3 other methods.

Missiles

Any explosive can be crafted along with a Missile Module to create a missile. Missiles must be launched from a Launcher Platform with a Support Frame and a Control Panel. There are three tiers to each component, and the tier of the components is the highest tier missile they can launch. For this purpose, tier 4 missiles count as tier 3. To launch a missile, the control panel must be powered and the target coordinates must be entered into the control panel. The missile will be launched when the control panel is powered with a redstone signal.

Grenades

Any Tier 1 explosive can be turned into a grenade by crafting it with a String. Grenades are thrown by right clicking, and will explode shortly after. Grenade explosions are noticeably smaller than their explosive counterparts, but their fuses are longer.

Minecarts

Any Tier 1 or Tier 2 explosive can by crafted with a minecart to create an explosive mineart. They will detonate when lit by a Flint and Steel or pass over a redstone powered rail.

Special Missiles

Anti-Ballistic Missile

The Anti-Ballistic Missile is a specialized missile used to take down enemy missiles while airborne. When in the air, the missile will attempt to detect any and all missiles within a 20 to 30 block range. Once it has detected a missile it will fly towards it's target missile, eliminating the target missile and itself. If the missile does not detect any missiles during its flight, it will cause an average sized explosion on impact.

Cluster Missile

Cluster Missiles will split into 8 conventional missiles when airborne, confusing radar and raining destruction upon enemy territory. This missile is especially effective against anti-ballistic missiles and simple defense systems.

Homing Missile

The Homing Missile is capable of tracking a specific entity and shooting it down. To give it a target, simply right-click an entity with a tracker, and right click the tracker onto the missile. After that, simply launch the missile in the air and it will lock onto the entity and fire it down. The homing missile is not 100% accurate, so caution is advised.

Nuclear Cluster Missile

The Nuclear Cluster Missile is the same as a nuclear missile except that it will burst apart into several separate nukes upon detonation. It is important to remember to set the detonation height to higher than normal, as it will only split once it detonates.

Other Items

Missile Module

When crafted alongside other explosives, Missile Modules will be made into the corresponding missiles. Missile Modules can also be fired from launchers, but will not do any damage.

Rocket Launcher

The Rocket Launcher is a small, handheld device capable of launching Tier 1 and 2 missiles in a straight line. Note that it is incapable of launching homing missiles and cluster missiles.

Laser Designator

The Laser Designator can be used to order air strikes from missile launchers by right-clicking a targeted location. Before the player is able to order missile launches a frequency must be set. First, set the launcher control panel frequency to a non-zero value. Then, right-click the control panel with the Laser Designator, setting the frequency of the remote. Finally, right-click the target with the Laser Designator. Note that the player can link the Laser Designator to more than one missile launcher and it will ensure that they do not collide with each other.

Defuser

Ftb Minecraft

The Defuser is an item that can be used to defuse primed explosives. The explosive will drop as an item and may be picked up and reused. The Defuser also works with explosive minecarts as well as vanilla TNT.

Antidote

The antidote is a medicine made from pumpkin or grass seeds. The antidote works similar to milk, with the added bonus that antidotes are stackable. Some poisons cannot be cured with milk. These poisons can however be cured with the antidote.

Other Blocks

Spikes

Spikes can be placed down on blocks and will harm entities that touch them. They come in two special flavors: Flammable and poisonous.

S-Mine

Also known as the 'Bouncing Betty', the S-Mine combines the properties of the Attractive, Fragmentation, and Repulsive explosives. Upon detonation, a small explosive charge launches the mine several meters into the air, after which the main charge explodes, shooting explosive fragments in every direction. Note that the S-Mine can be triggered by other explosives and can be used to create chain reactions.
