Federico Michael Gaytan (born August 7, 1995), better known by his alias FEDMYSTER, is an American Twitchstreamer and YouTube personality. Gaytan is best known for his live streams on the Twitch platform, where he streams his gaming and IRL experiences.^[4] He is a former member of OfflineTV, an online social entertainment group of content creators.

Gaytan is best known for his live streams on the Twitch platform, where he streams his gaming and IRL experiences. He is a former member of OfflineTV, an online social entertainment group of content creators.

Early life[edit]

Gaytan was born in 1995 to Mexican-American parents. He grew up with a brother in the Los Angeles area and attended the University of California, Santa Cruz. Gaytan dropped out in his last semester to pursue a career in video editing and to support his mother and brother after the death of his father.^[5]

Career[edit]

Gaytan was a full-time video editor for content creator Christian 'IWDominate' Rivera, a former pro player for Team Liquid. He stopped editing for Rivera as he was invited to join the group Offline TV as an editor in June 2017.^[6] On July 8, 2017, he published his first YouTube video with the group, where he was formally introduced as the group's editor.^[7] He was named as talent in January 2018 and was added to the OfflineTV streamer roster.

Twitch[edit]

Gaytan began his streaming career in early January 2018, after transitioning from being the editor for Offline TV. In the same year, his Twitch emote called 'Fed7' had been used a reported 431 million times in three months, making it the most popular emote on the site at that time.^[8]

Ban history[edit]

Gaytan has been banned by Twitch on several occasions since he began streaming. His first ban occurred on November 28, 2017, where he was banned for jokingly photoshopping cleavage on pictures of his roommates Pokimane and Lilypichu for a YouTube thumbnail. The ban lasted 24 hours.^[9] He was banned a second time in May 2018 after he showed a business card with personal information during an IRL stream. The ban lasted 3 days.^[10] His third ban, which occurred on July 20, 2018, was met with controversy. Gaytan was doing an unusual stream at the time, watching paint dry on a canvas while also not interacting with the online audience. An anonymous donator submitted a message with the pejorative 'N-word.' A text to speech system read the message out loud and could not be stopped by his roommate due to a bug in the streaming software. Twitch responded with a 7-day ban, mainly due to Gaytan staying in character and not being able to mute the audio.^[11] His fourth ban occurred on April 1, 2019, after an intoxicated Gaytan knocked over private property during a live stream in Japan. The ban lasted 14 days.^[12]

FEDMYSTER2 was temporarily banned on May 1, 2020 after Gaytan accidentally showed a glimpse of a nude picture of another streamer named Alinity while scrolling on Twitter. The ban, originally set for 3 days, was controversial as it was longer than the one imposed on Alinity herself (24 hours).^[13][14] The ban was lifted early after Gaytan appealed it to Twitch staff.^[15]

On May 8, 2020, Gaytan's emote FedSimp had been taken down on the grounds of targeted harassment and bullying. Although he claimed my community never used it with ill intent and It was mostly banter and, in some cases, a compliment. Really unfortunate... One of my favorite emotes, the spamming of this emote on another streamer's channel lead to it being taken down.^[16]

Misconduct allegations[edit]

On June 27, 2020, fellow Offline TV members Yvonne 'Yvonnie' Ng and Lily 'LilyPichu' Ki came forward with sexual misconduct allegations involving Gaytan.^[17] Ng stated that on two separate instances, Gaytan would enter her room uninvited, lay down on her bed, and begin inappropriately touching her.^[18] Ki stated that Gaytan would also enter her room uninvited and make inappropriate advances on her.^[19] These allegations resulted in Gaytan's immediate removal from the group.^[20][21][22] The situation was further elaborated on by fellow roommate and streamer Pokimane (Imane Anys), wherein she discussed that he had also made advances on her personal life and fueled growing distrust between the two. Anys also conveyed how the situation with Gaytan contributed the most to her leaving the Offline TV house. In addition, she outlined how a group of eight other close female friends of OfflineTV, along with members of the group itself, had an intervention with Gaytan, where each relayed specific instances where he had made them feel uncomfortable. She mentioned that while he had seemed extremely apologetic during the intervention, immediately following it he began to contact others not involved, saying that the situation was exaggerated and that he was not at fault. CNN called this situation 'one of [the] biggest #MeToo moments' of the gaming world.^[23][24]

On November 24, 2020, a 25-page statement by Gaytan titled 'my truth' was leaked, which alleged that much of the situation was exaggerated to form a false narrative against him. Gaytan specifically cited a story where Anys claimed that he had attempted to have Ng fired after she refused advances from him; he refuted this allegation and instead claimed that Anys had wanted to fire Ng much earlier as conveyed in text messages presented in the statement. Anys addressed the leaked document on stream the next day by reading and responding to each section, conveying the situation in her point of view, but stressing that neither had ill will for the other. Gaytan later responded to the leak by stating that the statement was made months ago and that although they disagreed on some aspects, they eventually decided to keep it hidden and move on, and that the statement being leaked was unintentional and undesired for both of them. ^[25][26]

After the OfflineTV group officially announced that Federico 'Fedmyster' Gaytan would no longer be living in the streaming house, Imane 'Pokimane' Anys took to her Twitch platform to give more context to the situation. The popular variety streamer was able to shed more light on the situation regarding Fedmyster and the sexual harassment allegations members of the group have made against him.

With the recent sexual assault accusations against various Twitch streamers, Fedmyster's case has been getting a lot of attention on social media. Fans of the OfflineTV content creators have had many thoughts on the situation, and while many fans support the group's decision, some people believe that this issue shouldn't be handled publicly and that streamers like Yvonne 'Yvonnie' Ng and Lily 'Lilypichu' Ki overreacted. Pokimane decided to set the record straight.

Pokimane started her stream reiterating what fans already knew about the sexual harassment situation before telling some of her own experiences. In the statement Yvonnie posted to Twitter, she had said that Pokimane had her own stories to tell regarding Fedmyster. Pokimane detailed some of these accounts with Fedmyster for her stream, which at some points during the conversation had over 90,000 viewers.

According to Pokimane, Fed isolated her from the rest of the group in the house by being friendly with her while bad talking her to the others while she wasn't there. She also told her audience that Fed consistently lied to guys that she was interested in, telling them that he was actually in a relationship with her but not to tell her or anyone else that he told them.

On top of this behavior, Pokimane also detailed Fedmyster's actions after the incidents that Yvonnie and LilyPichu made public. She said that after his alleged sexual harassment of Yvonnie, he started bad mouthing her to the rest of the house to the point that Yvonnie was nearly let go from her position at the OfflineTV organization. Fedmyster also complained to Pokimane after his incident with LilyPichu, saying that LilyPichu was hanging out so much with YouTube content creator Michael Reeves and that he felt she was abandoning him as a friend.

At these points, Pokimane didn't know of the encounters between the female Twitch streamers and Fedmyster, and she says that she feel horrible about the way she reacted to the lies he told her. Pokimane says that DisguisedToast also tried to talk to Fedmyster about his actions a year ago when DisguisedToast was the only other member of OfflineTV who knew about Fedmyster's sexual harassment of Yvonnie. DisguisedToast told Pokimane that Fedmyster got very defensive and that he was more concerned with who knew about this incident than the person he hurt.

Pokimane said that the reason the group decided to go public about this was that, after a three-hour intervention the house had with Fedmyster, they heard from other streamers that he dramatically misinterpreted the situation to them that made him look better. Since these were the manipulated behaviors the OfflineTV house told him that he needed to stop, they realized that he would not cease this behavior and could potentially hurt other women unless people were warned.

Pokimane mentioned briefly that while there were many reasons she left the OfflineTV house, Fedmyster was one of these reasons. Now that he will no longer be living there and will be starting therapy on July 1, hopefully, he and the streaming house will be better off moving forward.
